Poetry v. patriotism.

Everybody's excited!
We're on the ninth day of first grade over here. So far, so good.

This is part of a conversation we had in the car on the way home today.

Me: So what did you do on your rotation today?

 Caleb: Poetry.

M: Oh, yeah? What did you do for poetry?

C: "Little Bo Peep" and "What Are Little Girls Made of."

M: Ah. So what are little girls made of?

C, in a sing-song voice: Sugar and spice and everything nice.

M: And what are little boys made of?

C, disgusted: Frogs and snails and little puppy dogs' tails. But that's not what I'm made of, Mama.

M: I didn't think so. What are you made of?

 C: Olympic spirit.

Proof: he just had me sing him The Star-Spangled Banner for his bedtime song.
