We took his training wheels off earlier in the year, and both Paul and I ran up and down the street with him on a few different occasions, each for ten or so minutes. I thought the poor child was hopeless; I was getting ready to put the training wheels back on so he wouldn't be stuck at home. But then two important things happened while Paul was in California in June. First: Caleb made some new friends (brothers) who are a year older and a year younger who both ride their bikes. Second: he discovered this song:
The next thing I knew, he was insisting on trying his bike again, and he rode five feet by himself out of the garage. Within ten minutes, he was doing great--just as Paul drove up from the airport. Ta-da!
What I have to offer from this experience is that bike riding and potty training are the same: when kids are ready, they do it all by themselves.
[This breakthrough brought to you based on the performance of a single child!]
