The wilderness.

So, I went to girls camp last week, as I've been mentioning. I was nervous about this primarily because we left on the day I began my 24th week of pregnancy, but also because (1) I tend to get claustrophobic in tents; (2) I don't really know any of the young women seeing as I'm in primary; (3) I don't really know any of the other leaders; (4) and so on.

In spite of these fears, I've found myself missing girls camp this week for more convincing reasons than those paltry worries. To wit:
  • There was constant adult (and adult-ish) conversation. Although the topics were wide and ranging, Star Wars was never once mentioned (!).
  • People were constantly praising me for accomplishing simple tasks. "You helped set up the tent?! You're amazing!" "I can't believe you actually went on the hike this morning! Wow!"
  • I was not allowed to carry anything--not even the arrows that I shot (all of which totally missed the bails of hay, not to mention the targets). The girls got everything for me.
  • The girls were awesome. Not only did they fetch my arrows off the mountainside without my asking, they also were just nice. One got the last package of Cheetohs and gave them to me because she'd heard me say I like them. They always found me chairs, got me water, asked how they could help, and never complained when it was their time to help cook or clean.
  • I didn't cook a single thing.
  • I didn't clean a single thing.
  • I was encouraged to take naps.
In short, the only things I really missed were a bed, a shower, and Caleb. I missed Paul, too, but he was there for half the time (which is really what ensured camp success*).

*In Taylorsville, together Paul and I charmed the girls by recounting our various dating stories. Here, we earned their admiration by quoting Nacho Libre extensively. Yes, we have serious skillz.

  2. Doesn't sound too much like the Mexico wilderness we braved together, does it? In that case, sign me up for next year's girls' camp in your ward.
