Q: What is your baby's name?
A: Cecily.
Q: Did you make that name up*?
A: No.
Q: How did you come up with it?
A: It's a real name.
Q: Is it the same name as Sicily?
A: No.
Q: Can I still call her Sicily?
A: No. You can call her "C.C." if "Cecily" is too difficult.
Q: So, she was a big baby. Is this because you were a really big baby?
A: No. I was an average-sized baby.
Q: Was she so big because you had gestational diabetes?
A: Nope. No gestational diabetes.
Q: Well, then why she was so big?
A: Possibly because she was a week late. And possibly because I exercised nearly every day of my pregnancy (exercise=increased blood flow; increased blood flow=increased nutrients). Stop being an insensitive clod and implying that I had a big baby because I'm fat.
Q: What fun things is she doing?
A: She smiles a lot. The following picture was taken when she was four days old (though perhaps not the best picture, it does showcase the clearly non-gas-induced smile). I'm pretty sure she's gifted in the smiling department. What I'm saying is that she's a smiling prodigy. Mozart played the piano early; Cecily smiled early. It's a gift. She also distinctly giggled one day. Very charming. She's also a good cuddler. And she can sleep through all of Caleb's noises (impressive).
Q: How does Caleb feel about his baby sister?
A: In his own words? "Good."
He sings her songs and is generally unfazed by our sleep deprivation and semi-distractedness. For the first several days of her life, he was extremely excited--so excited that he (literally) told every person he saw about her. An anecdote:
The day I came home from the hospital, Paul and Caleb went to the pharmacy to fill my prescriptions. The pharmacist was busy, so they were waiting at the counter. Well, Paul was waiting. Caleb peeked over the counter and said, "Hi. Hi! We're here to get my mom some medicine because she just had my baby sister. Her name is Cecily." He also told everyone else at the grocery store and the hospital.
I think the most traumatic it's been was when we were at the hospital for two nights and he was staying with Grandma and Grandpa (which he typically loves to do). He cried whenever he had to leave with my parents, though, because he wanted to stay with his family. It was heart-wrenching, but since he was sick and also since there's nothing for a four-year-old to do at the hospital, we sent him away. Several times each day.
Q: Is there anything she needs for Christmas?
A: "Need" is a difficult word. Diapers (size 2 or bigger), I suppose, or bigger clothes (larger than 6 months).
Q: Do you have any more pictures to share?
A: Twist my arm.
*This question was asked most often at the hospital, notably by two of our nurses--named (and I swear I am not making this up) Jett and Kardee.
She is really cute! I have small babies that grow in imperceptibly small increments (my 10-month-old is currently 16 pounds), so I love fat babies. Plus I was 10-pounder myself (and my mom was actually quite skinny). I think people named Kardee have no right to comment on the 'wierdness' of other people's names.
ReplyDeleteTwo things:
ReplyDelete1) Who the "h" names their kids Jett and Kardee?
2) Oh, my GOODNESS, you have the cutest babies EVER! I hope my babies get some of those cute genes, too. Although, your kids are so cute, it wouldn't surprise me if they got all of the cute Huff gene quota and my babies are left with nothing. Hopefully the Carper genes will be strong enough so we don't have troll babies:)
Okay, three things:
3) CUTEST BABIES EVER!!! (insert high pitched squeal here)
She is so adorable! I am literally wrangling myself further into the couch so I don't abandon house and home to hop in the car and come snuggle your baby.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Cecily is a perfectly lovely and normal, well-documented name. Then again, my name is Tamsin and my son is Espen, so what do we know about baby naming? Really, though, it's not like anyone born in Utah in the last 25 years really has any room to get high and mighty about baby names. I'm looking at you, parents of Tyranny and Jackstopher.
First of all, I love her name. I think it is beautiful. It was the name of a little girl on the series "Avonlea"--a show I watched growing up. Second of all, I cannot believe people asked you about why she was so big. Duh! Some babies are bigger, some are smaller. And hello. She was born late. And besides, she's perfect, so who cares? By the way, thanks for posting the pictures. I've been checking your blog just about every day to see if you added any more. She is beautiful and I especially love the one of her very contagious smile.

Q. Why haven't we come to visit and meet little Cecily yet?
ReplyDeleteA. Because we're lame.
Q. So, when can we meet the little CC and see her proud big brother?
A. __________
Oh, that's a cute baby. Really, really cute. You should instead be asking how you produced such a beautiful baby--it is better for your self-esteem than focusing on size issues. Because, good heavens, she is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the pics! She is wonderful, and you all look so happy in the earlier pictures. I miss you all :)
ReplyDeletewhat weirdos, Cecily is a gorgeous name, and a gorgeous baby! Love the smilers!! Caleb sounds like the cutest big brother. :)
