Oh, help.

I feel myself in the vice-like grip of a new sewing frenzy. I have, over the last several months, been making black-out curtains for every bedroom in the house (given that (a) our bedrooms are all east-facing and (b) we aren't the people most apt to leap from our beds singing joyfully at the crack of dawn). The baby's room is, of course, next on the docket, if I could just find a drapery fabric that I liked. I also have fabric to make valances for the dining room, but I can't think about these things right now.

Because I found a sewing blog. (Sewing blogs! Why haven't I investigated these before?! Good heavens.) And, yes, the Thing That I Must Make Next is a quilt. Of course. Who doesn't need to make their first-ever quilt in late May when a bedroom needs to be painted and curtains made and girls' camp planned and papers graded all before too much more time passes? Who, I ask you?

All I can say is that I found an Etsy shop with an adorable "charm pack" for cheap, and it was mailed today, so the questions of what color to paint and which fabric to make curtains of will have to wait.

If all goes well, there may be pictures soon. Or everyone I know may start receiving quilts for their holidays. (Cross your fingers for me.)

  1. Naturally you have to make the quilt first so you can take a color from it to paint the nursery. You knew that all along.

  4. Tamsin, you read my mind! But I have to admit it's even worse: obviously, first I have to make a practice quilt so I can be *sure* the real one will be cute. Right? That's clear to everyone, isn't it?

    I think I have a disease...

  5. Why is this post not called "Nesting"? I mean, I know your vocabulary (in English and Spanish) has always been twice what mine has, but now you're throwing out terms like valences, and I am really lost. Perhaps you can share the sewing blog site and I can catch up...or maybe it's just nesting? (Much cooler nesting than the cleaning urges.)

  6. Isn't nesting supposed to happen in the third trimester? I think I've got a while yet. But then maybe relabeling my obsessions as nesting would make me sound less neurotic. Good idea, Janel!

Also, valances are those little curtains that hang at the top of windows but don't go all the way down--like this. The only reason you don't know this word (in English or Spanish) is most certainly not that my vocabulary is bigger than yours (we both know that's an ugly lie). Rather, it is most likely that valances might actually be an ugly, outdated thing of the past, and few people are likely to put them in their houses on purpose. (My decorating abilities are a post of their own, though.)
